Il testo di Never Had No One Ever si apre così: "When you walk without ease / On these streets where you were raised / I had a really bad dream / It lasted twenty years, seven months, / And twenty seven days" ovvero "Quando cammini con difficoltà nelle strade per le strade in cui sei cresciuto, ho fatto un sogno davvero brutto: è durato vent'anni, sette mesi e ventisette giorni". Attribuendo con qualche forzatura l'inizio del sogno al giorno di nascita di Morrissey (22 maggio 1959), allora paroliere e cantante degli Smiths e sommando vent'anni, sette mesi e ventisette giorni, si arriva al 18 gennaio 1980.
